In the past week, the combined market capitalization of four of India's top ten most valuable companies declined by ₹96,605.66 crore. HDFC Bank experienced the most significant loss, with its market valuation decreasing by ₹37,025.46 crore to ₹13,37,919.84 crore. ICICI Bank's valuation fell by ₹29,324.55 crore to ₹8,93,378.50 crore. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) saw a reduction of ₹24,856.26 crore, bringing its market cap to ₹14,83,144.53 crore. State Bank of India (SBI) also experienced a decline, losing ₹5,399.39 crore to settle at ₹7,08,168.60 crore.

In contrast, other leading firms recorded gains during the same period. Reliance Industries' market valuation increased by ₹41,138.41 crore to ₹16,93,373.48 crore, maintaining its position as the most valuable company in India. Hindustan Unilever's valuation rose by ₹15,331.08 crore to ₹5,65,194.18 crore. Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) added ₹13,282.49 crore, reaching ₹5,74,689.29 crore. Infosys gained ₹9,031.19 crore, with its valuation now at ₹8,04,834.34 crore. ITC's market cap increased by ₹3,878.63 crore to ₹6,03,064.44 crore, and Bharti Airtel added ₹199.36 crore, bringing its valuation to ₹9,10,934.58 crore.

The bullish market in 2024 was primarily driven by robust liquidity, with retail investors and high-net-worth individuals contributing through direct investments, mutual funds, portfolio management services, and family offices. By the end of the year, the Nifty's PE ratio stood at approximately 22, staying consistently above 20 throughout the year. Historically, a PE ratio above 25 is considered a sign of overvaluation.

The broader market, however, is even pricier. In 2024, retail investors and high-net-worth individuals showed a strong preference for midcaps and smallcaps, pushing valuations in these segments higher than those of large caps.

Compared to the broader market of midcaps and smallcaps, the Nifty and large caps, in general, are not yet in overvalued territory, leaving room for potential gains in 2025.

However, caution is necessary. A mere 15% rise in the Nifty from end-2024 levels could push it into overvalued territory, especially without strong corporate earnings growth to support it. Historically, robust earnings growth has helped cushion high valuations, but the current market outlook is less optimistic. With slower earnings growth expected, there is a risk that further price increases could outpace the fundamental earnings support, leading to potential overvaluation.

In the long run, the Indian market is expected to grow in line with the economy. However, in the short term, there are ample reasons to approach the market with caution and prudence.

It is crucial to maintain vigilant oversight of your portfolio, closely monitoring indicators of weakening fundamentals or potential overvaluation. This time when we saw significant outflows in the equity markets and RBI was aggressively monitering the current situation and we used around $50-60 billion reserves to defent the ruppee. India foriegn exchange hit low since september,27 amounts to $704.9 billion and shriveled to $644.4 billion as on december,20 showed data from RBI. Then RBI governer shaktikanta das said on 6 december that forex reserves were “quite robost” and “the depletion in the reserves, which has happened in the last few months, part of it and a good part of it because of valuation losses.”

The FPIs were net buyers of only $124 million worth of indian equities in 2024, down from $20.7 billion in 2023, data shows from NSDL. overseas investors sees very cautious on indian equities and now we all need to be very keen interested that how they behave in upcoming months, whether they become cautious or fund return to indian equities.

we have depreciated less in recent dollar index spike compared to our trade partners like china and europe. so thats why there is pending depereciation pressure seen on the ruppee and also REER valuation around 8%, experts are feeling anticipated that lower depreciation compared to other currencies sees some room for more correction in the value . while some assumption says that rupee touching 87-levels in the coming quarter and other says that ruppee holding at 86.2. on thursady it closed at 85.75.

REER stands Real Effective Exchange Rate it is an inflation adjusted trade-weighed average value of the domestic currency in terms of its trades partners currencies.
